Ludo is the classic race game for two to four players, played in homes across India and around the world. Roll the die, bring your four tokens out of the yard, race them once around the board and up your home column, and get all four home before anyone else. Land on a rival token to cut it and send it back to its yard, then keep an eye on your own.

Play Ludo online for free in your browser, with no download and no sign up. Take on the computer at three levels, from Easy to Hard, or pass one phone around the family. To play Ludo with friends, create a room and send the link on WhatsApp so everyone can join from anywhere, or choose Play online to be matched with other players. Games against the computer and pass and play keep working offline once the page has loaded.

Every family plays Ludo a little differently, so switch on the house rules you grew up with. The dice are fair: computer players roll the same dice as you, and online rooms lock the dice in before the first roll so anyone can check them afterwards. When the game ends, a Luck vs Skill review shows whether it was you or the dice. For family in different cities, a play over days room allows up to 12 hours a turn.

How to play Ludo

  1. Roll a 6 to bring a token out of your yard onto your start square.
  2. Move one token clockwise by the number you rolled, and if any token can move, you must move one.
  3. Rolling a 6, cutting a token or bringing one home earns an extra roll, but three 6s in a row end your turn.
  4. Land exactly on a rival token to cut it and send it back to its yard, except on the safe star and start squares.
  5. After one lap, turn into your own home column, where no other colour can follow or cut you.
  6. You need the exact number to reach the home triangle in the centre.
  7. The first player to bring all four tokens home wins, and the others can keep playing for second and third place.

Controls

Tap or click the dice to roll, then tap or click a glowing token to move it. With a keyboard, press Tab to reach the dice or a token, then press Enter or Space. A ring around your avatar shows how much of your 30 seconds is left, and if time runs out the game plays that roll or move for you.

Fair dice you can check

Games on your device roll with your browser's secure random numbers, so all six faces are equally likely, and computer players get exactly the same dice as you. Online rooms use commit and reveal: before the game the server shows a fingerprint of its secret seed, and at the end it reveals the seed so your browser can check every roll. Each player's browser adds its own seed too, so the server cannot steer the rolls.

Your family's house rules

Play the way your family always has. A 1 can bring a token out as well as a 6, you can get three tries to leave the yard, and two tokens on one square can be safe or even block the road. You can also require a cut before going home, make cutting compulsory, change what three 6s do, or play a quick game where the first token home wins.

Luck vs Skill review

Was it you or the dice? After each game, the review scores every move where you had a real choice against the computer's top pick, and rates every roll against the average of all six faces in that position. It also lists key moments, such as revenge cuts, heartbreak cuts near home and the luckiest and unluckiest rolls, so the family argument gets settled with numbers.

Tips to win at Ludo

  • Bring a second token out early, so most rolls give you a choice instead of forcing one move.
  • Rest on star and start squares when a rival is close behind, because no token can be cut there.
  • A rival up to six squares behind you can cut you with a single roll. Move out of that range or onto a safe square when you can.
  • Cut a rival who has travelled far, since it costs them the most, and under the standard rules every cut also earns you an extra roll.
  • Late in the game, get tokens into your home column, where nobody can cut them, rather than chasing rivals around the board.
  • Play the Hard computer, then read your Luck vs Skill review to see where your moves differed from the computer's top pick.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ludo free to play?

Yes. Every mode is free, with no download, no sign up and nothing to buy.

How do I play Ludo with friends online?

Choose Play with friends, create a room and send the link on WhatsApp. Friends tap the link to join, with no app to install, and chat is emoji only. To play new people instead, choose Play online and you are matched with other players.

Can you play Ludo with 2 players?

Yes. Ludo works with 2, 3 or 4 players, and in a 2 player game the two colours start in opposite corners. Play a friend, pass one phone between you, or take on the computer.

Is Ludo a game of luck or skill?

Both. The dice decide the numbers, and your choices decide how well you use them. The Luck vs Skill review after every game shows how much of the result came from each.

Are the dice really random?

Yes. Games on your device use your browser's secure random numbers, and computer players get exactly the same dice as you. Online rolls are locked in before the game starts and can be checked after it ends with the Fair dice button.

Do you need a 6 to start in Ludo?

Under the standard rules, yes: a 6 brings a token out of the yard onto your start square. House rules can also let a 1 bring a token out, or give you three tries to roll your way out.

What happens if you roll three 6s in a row?

Under the standard rules, the third 6 is not played and your turn passes. House rules can instead undo the whole turn, or allow any number of 6s.

Can I play Ludo offline?

Yes. Games against the computer and pass and play keep working without internet once the page has loaded. Your game is saved after every move, so if the tab closes, Continue your game picks up where you left off.
